This is a great little short scale DIY bass kit from Solo Music Gear. The body is basswood, not my favorite wood and one I have always ended up painting. But this one looked really nice, so I decided to try doing a natural finish. After sanding off the “poly sealant” that is used on all Solo guitar kits, I applied some Tru Oil Gunstock Finish to see what would happen. It turned out great and really shows off the grain, which is pretty subtle in basswood. The neck is maple and, along with the maple fingerboard, is also finished with Tru Oil Gunstock Finish.
It sounds great but isn’t my favorite to play. This is only a 28.6-inch scale, similar to a Fender Mini-Precision or an Ibanez Mikro bass. The difference from a standard 30-inch short scale bass is noticeable.
