DIY #13 5-String Bass

I’ve played a 4-string bass since the 1970s, but this is my first 5-string bass ever. It is an ash body with a spalted maple top, finished in Tru Oil Gunstock Finish. The neck is maple and walnut also finished in Tru Oil Gunstock Finish, and it has a rosewood fingerboard.

In early 2023, less than a year after I started building, I came across an eBay seller who had several “blem” kits from Bargain Musician, a now defunct DIY guitar kit company. This is the first of three kits I purchased from him, the best by far as the quality of each successive one was notably lower. This one had a little chip in the veneer on the very tip of the headstock.

It has pretty good passive electronics but did not come with any instructions on how to wire it. I ended up with a volume and tone for each pickup and a master volume (thought about a blend control, still might do that). I bought a 3-band active preamp for it, but did not like it and ended up sending it back.
