DIY #19 Explorer Style Bass

This one was fun and easy. It is a Leo Jaymz Explorer Bass, and I bought the kit from a guy on Facebook Marketplace. He had painted the body and the neck and headstock all black using auto body paint. Then he never went any further with it and sold the kit. I sanded all the black off the neck and headstock, and sanded it off the front of the body leaving the sides and back painted black. This is all mahogany, so I finished the front with the same burgundy Keda Wood Dye blend that I used on my 6-string Explorer style and Strat style kits. I touched up the black with jet black stain and sprayed the whole body with clear lacquer. I put Tru Oil Gunstock Finish on the neck, which was now extremely smooth.

Assembly was very easy, and even though this is huge, it is comfortable because my arm rests on that big wing in the body. It is so big, though, that it won’t even fit in my Gator Extreme Gig Bag. I made a heavy cardboard boot for the part of the wing that sticks out. Fun, fun project.
